The Story of Creation, Fall, Rescue, and Restoration

Creation

The story begins with God who has always been—He is the eternal God. God then spoke the universe and everything in it into existence. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen.1:1). The crown of His creation was mankind, made in His very image. As image bearers, we were made by God to reflect His glory on earth by worshiping and obeying Him, and deriving all that we need for life and happiness in our relationship with Him.

Fall

But out of a desire to live independent of God, mankind rebelled against God by disobeying Him. This is what the Bible calls sin. Romans 3:23 says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The consequence of sin was that all of creation was now thrown into chaos. Pain, suffering, and death, had entered the world.

Most tragic of all, sin has severed our relationship with God. We are now separated from the very source of life and now stand under His judgment.  “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). The penalty for sinning against an infinitely holy God is infinite death in a place the Bible calls hell.  What’s worse is that we can do nothing to change our status before God. We cannot cleanse ourselves of our sin and work our way to a right standing before God.

Rescue

The good news of Christianity is that God in His love has taken the initiative to rescue us from our sins by sending His own Son to pay the penalty for our sins. Romans 5:8 says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” In short, Jesus lived the life we should have lived and died the death we should have died. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

What Jesus accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection, can be applied to our lives if we place our faith in Him. Faith is turning to Jesus and trusting Him alone for your salvation. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Restoration

For all who place their faith in Christ alone, everything will one day be restored to the way it was meant to be. “Behold, I am making all things new” (Rev.21:5). There will be no more pain, no more sickness, no more suffering, and no more death. The best part is that we will be with God forever. We will see Jesus face to face and live in perfect harmony and intimacy with Him who created us, loved us, and died for us (Rev.22:3-5).

The gospel is the means by which one enters into a relationship with God and grows in their discipleship to Christ.
